So you want to do your part conserving the environment?
Maintain a healthy body weight! That’s right, the #1 thing you can do to reduce your carbon footprint just happens to be the #1 thing you can do to live a healthier life (besides not smoking cigarettes). How do you figure? Check out the article in Science Daily for more details, but it goes something like this:
1. the food you eat needs to be transported to your local grocery store. “…researchers estimate that a lean population of 1 billion people would emit 1.0 GT (1,000 million tonnes) less carbon dioxide equivalents per year compared with a fat one.”
2. food production is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. studies have shown “a lean population, such as that seen in Vietnam, will consume almost 20% less food and produce fewer greenhouse gases than a population in which 40% of people are obese (close to that seen in the USA today).”
So there you go. Try to get your produce from local growers and maybe take that 3000 calorie diet down to 2000. You’ll save yourself some huffing-and-puffing getting up those stairs and who knows, you might just save a polar bear.
Cancer and Your Nutrition
April 10th, 2009
That’s right, it’s not just diabetes or heart-health any more. Significant evidence presented by the American Institute for Cancer Research on Capital Hill concluded almost 40 percent of breast cancer and 45 percent of colon cancer could be prevented by getting your fruits and veggies and maintaining a healthy body weight. Sure, a pack a day will kill ya faster, but your diet and fitness might be doing just as good a job. Check out more details here and remember to keep it nutritious!
Where’s the Confirmation?
April 7th, 2009Hello again alpha users! Ah, things they are a-changin’ all the time. You’ll notice that from now on, when you enter a new food, we no longer make you confirm it. You can always go and edit it and create your own recipes if you don’t like our guess just like normal.
Stay tuned…this will be super useful when you see what’s next by popular demand!
New Search Algorithm Testing
April 6th, 2009Just a heads up to alpha users, we a
re going to be trying new things with the search algorithm over the coming weeks. If you notice it is more aligned or less aligned with your expectations, let us know! Also notice more and more generic ingredients being added for things like “turkey sandwich” “garden salad” or “chicken burrito” These generics are based on rough averages of similar foods already found in the nutritter database. We hope these will be a convenience for most of you who just want a quick way to enter-and-go without worrying about exact ingredients. Let us know what you think!

A Few Changes
March 26th, 2009Hello Alpha Users! Come check out some small tweaks to the food log that we think make it easier to use. There’s lots more ahead, but for now, we changed the labels and functionality of the three buttons you see after entering a new food. Let us know what you think.
Next up is adding more generics to the database and using them when you don’t specify a brand in your description. Keep the feedback coming and don’t forget to connect with other alpha users on the community page.
